Women in Wind at Brazil Windpower 2019

On 28 May 2019, Joyce Lee, Policy and Operations Director at GWEC (below), spoke about the Women in Wind program at Brazil Windpower 2019.

Joined by Agnes Costa (Head of the Special Advisory on Regulatory Matters – Ministry of Mines and Energy Executive Secretariat), Ney Maron (Director, Maron Consultoria) and Francine Pisni (Regulatory and Technical Advisory, ABEEólica – Associação Brasileira de Energia Eólica), the panel discussed how gender and social justice relate to sustainable development, and how wind power can lead on increasing gender diversity.

Wind power has a monumental opportunity to demonstrate leadership in gender diversity. As part of a constantly evolving renewable energy industry, playing a key role in market-making around the world, feeding into governments’ long-term plans for industrial growth and with STEM disciplines represented across the value chain, there are so many ways for the sector to act and effect positive change.

The discussion also touched on benchmarks and best practices for organizations to consider in a drive for gender diversity. Moderator Agnes Costa recommended the book What Works: Gender Equality by Design (2016) by Iris Bohnet, Professor and Academic Dean of Harvard Kennedy School. The book examines the shortfalls of diversity training programs in the workplace, and proposes behavioral design methods as a means to de-bias organizations.
