Global wind capacity could reach 2000GW by 2030 and meet up to 19% of electricity demand, according to a report.
The Global Wind Energy Outlook, released by the Global Wind Energy Council and Greenpeace International, also states that the sector could create more than two million new jobs worldwide and slash CO2 emissions by more than three billion tonnes per year.
Researchers add that by 2050, wind could provide 25% to 30% of global electricity supply.
"Wind power has become the least cost option when adding new capacity to the grid in an increasing number of markets and prices continue to fall," said GWEC chief executive Steve Sawyer.
