Webcast on Why Gender Diversity is Important for the Wind Industry

Women in Wind held a public webcast on 8 November 2019 on the topic “Why Gender Diversity is Important for the Wind Industry.” The webinar was led by four speakers who gave presentations on the state of play for gender diversity in renewables, and the barriers and opportunities for women working in the wind sector.

Only 32 per cent of the global renewables workforce is composed of women, and only 7 per cent of the sector’s leadership positions are held by women. Facing the tremendous challenge ahead to achieve a 1.5-degree pathway, we need to maximise our available human resources and capacity for innovation. This will require greater international collaboration and support across our sector for a gender-equitable energy transition.

Agenda:

  • Introduction and the state of gender equality in the wind sector, Joyce Lee, Policy and Operations Director, GWEC
  • The mentor’s perspective: Impacts and agenda-setting, Mary Thorogood, Senior Specialist, Strategy and Business, GSR Business Development, MHI Vestas
  • The mentee’s perspective: Impacts and building networks, Thembi Marivate, Senior Technical Leader – Europe and SSA, GE Renewable Energy
  • The company’s perspective: Impacts and internal visibility, Mercia Grimbeek, Compliance Manager, Mainstream Renewable Power
  • Q&A: Moderated by Joyce Lee, Policy and Operations Director, GWEC

Since launching in 2019, Women in Wind Global Leadership Program has reached several milestones: establishing a mentorship program; embarking on a study tour in Berlin and London; submitting a statement on gender mainstreaming to the UNFCCC; and conducting an active online storytelling campaign. We’ve also partnered with IRENA for a first-of-its-kind Global Gender Survey of the Wind Energy Industry.

As companies play a leading role in nurturing the next generation of business leaders who will act for sustainable development and growth, we invite you to watch our webcast and learn more about joining us in this important initiative to further gender diversity in wind!

Women in Wind is kindly supported by MHI Vestas, GE Renewable Energy and Mainstream Renewable Power in 2019.
