July 5 (SeeNews) - The third piece of the Fukushima Forward floating offshore wind farm demonstrator is travelling to the project site off the Japanese coast, said the consortium developing the scheme.

The 5-MW Hitachi HTW 5.0-126 wind turbine, mounted on a floating platform, left Sumoto port on July 2 and is expected to arrive at the project site off the coast of Fukushima prefecture on July 8. The system, dubbed Fukushima Hamakaze, will be installed next to two other turbines, one of 2 MW and one of 7 MW.

The project consortium will aim to expand the demonstration facility to 1 GW by the end of the decade, when it will use a total of 140 floating offshore wind turbines, the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) said previously.

Japanese firm Mitsubishi Corp (TYO:8058) acts as project integrator for the consortium behind the experimental offshore wind project. Other members are Marubeni, The University of Tokyo, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Japan Marine United Corp, Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding, Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal, Hitachi Ltd, Furukawa Electric, Shimizu Corp and Mizuho Information & Research Institute Inc. They have been working on the project since March 2012.
