Its synergies for use with offshore wind have not gone unnoticed, with many large scale offshore wind developments underway, ever declining offshore wind costs, promising policies and the looming prospect of stricter carbon prices, there has never been a better time to consider this collaboration. Join UN Global Compact, the Global Wind Energy Council, and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) for the launch of the global ‘Roadmap to Integrate Offshore Renewable Energy in a Climate-Smart Marine Spatial Plan’ – and hear from representatives of the public sector, industry and international organizations on how robust spatial planning processes can be key levers for successfully scaling-up ocean-based climate change mitigation solutions.
The ocean hosts a wealth of climate change mitigation solutions, including offshore wind – but is increasingly under pressure from different human activities. Climate-Smart Marine Spatial Planning is a process with potential to reconcile clean energy’s role in delivering decarbonization with biodiversity considerations, wider Sustainable Development Goals, and ambitions of other marine users, including fisheries, shipping and coastal tourism.

South East Asia: Renewable Energy and Green Recovery
Before the COVID-19 pandemic struck countries in southeast Asia were seeing some of the highest annual growth rates of energy demand globally. However, many of these nations still rely on coal for their dominant source of energy. If these energy mixes transitioned to renewable energies the economic slowdown caused by COVID-19 could be catalysed. Governments need to leverage the wind industry’s potential to generate massive capital investment, create skilled jobs and community benefits to ensure a green recovery and reverse some of the negative impacts from coronavirus. Research by the World Economic Forum reveals that every dollar invested in the energy transition between now and mid decade, will result in a return of 3 to 7 USD by avoiding future costs of climate change externalities.

Wind energy has made significant inroads into Latin America’s energy mix, as a cost competitive source of clean energy and a key climate solution. Regional leaders such as Brazil and Chile have led the way in the region, relying on wind energy as a key driver of their national energy transitions.
At last year’s COP25 in Madrid, 10 countries of the LAC region committed to achieving the regional goal of 70% renewable energy by 2030 via the Renewable Energy for Latin America and the Caribbean (RELAC) Initiative.
To achieve these targets, governments must work in partnership with the private sector to create enabling policy and regulatory environments to allow for accelerated investment in wind power. This means exploiting the vast onshore potential and open up Latin America’s waters to offshore wind.
The scale up required to meet the RELAC and the wider global climate goals will also need significant investment in making the grid more flexible to take on larger shares of variable renewable energy. This will be a key enabler for wind energy, as a key driver of decarbonisation and economic growth in the region.
