Development of a Local Value Chain
Africa is endowed with vast wind resources,according to the IRENA Remap 2030 report,the continent holds 100GW of wind capabilities. Wind energy has already become the most competitive and mainstream energy source in many regions, despite the fact that no level playing field has yet been fixed,namely subsidies to fossil fuels have not yet been removed.
Unlocking the full potential to make these resources match with the increasing electrification demands of the continent requires sound frameworks and planning. This will necessitate a holistic approach that should include clear energy generation mixes with sustainable and long term visible planning as well as reinforcement of transmission and distribution networks,through grid extension programmes, an off-grid strategy (including standalone utility scale systems and mini-grids where hybrid plants shall pay a material role) together with interconnections to consolidate the regional power pools
